Why can't I change a Clever-synced user's role?

Roles and schools that come from Clever are locked because Clever is the source of truth. Learn what you can change in EnlightenAI.

A user's role and school access that come from Clever are locked in EnlightenAI because Clever is the source of truth and re-syncs your roster automatically. You can still upgrade a Clever user to a higher EnlightenAI role, but you can't lower them below their Clever role, and you can't edit school access that came from Clever.

Why is the role locked?

When a user is rostered through Clever, their role carries a "from Clever" label in the edit window, and that option is disabled. Clever re-syncs on a schedule, so any role it manages stays under Clever's control to keep your roster accurate.

You can still upgrade the user to a higher EnlightenAI role (for example, from Teacher to Staff or District Admin). What you can't do is set them below their Clever role. The window will show: "This user's current role can be upgraded, but not downgraded."

What about school access?

For teachers, school access is managed through Clever rosters. To add a teacher to another school, update their roster in your SIS rather than in EnlightenAI. Schools that came from Clever are checked and locked with a "from Clever" label. If you give someone the Staff role, you can manually add extra schools on top of their Clever access.

What happens if I change it anyway?

When you make a change, EnlightenAI saves it as an override. You'll see a warning: "These changes are no longer synced with Clever." After that, the user's role and school access won't update automatically from Clever — you'll need to manage them in EnlightenAI by hand. You can revert later to restore the synced defaults.

Can I edit non-Clever users freely?

Yes. Users who weren't rostered through Clever have no locked role or schools, so you can set their EnlightenAI role and school access directly in the Admin Console.
