Editing a rubric — and why rubrics lock after they're used

Why EnlightenAI rubrics lock once an assignment uses them, and how to duplicate, edit, and archive a rubric safely.

Written by Gautam Thapar

A rubric in EnlightenAI locks as soon as it's attached to an assignment, so the scores already given stay consistent. To make changes, duplicate the rubric and edit the copy — the original stays untouched.

Why does my rubric lock after I use it?

Once a rubric is used by an assignment, EnlightenAI locks it from editing. This protects the integrity of any grading done with it: if you could change the criteria or point values after students were scored, those scores would no longer match the rubric they were graded against.

When a rubric is locked, the Edit button is replaced with a disabled pencil. Hovering it shows the tip "Please duplicate and edit your rubric." You can still Duplicate, Archive, and Share a locked rubric.

How do I edit a rubric that's already in use?

Make a copy and edit that instead:

  1. Find the rubric in your rubric list and click Duplicate.

  2. The copy is created with " - Duplicated" added to its name. It's brand new and not yet used, so it's fully editable.

  3. Open the copy, make your changes, and use it on your next assignment.

A rubric that has never been attached to an assignment stays editable, so you can refine new rubrics freely before using them.

Can I delete a rubric?

There's no permanent delete. Instead, click Archive to remove a rubric from your active list. Archived rubrics can be brought back at any time with Unarchive, so nothing is lost.
