Syncing grades with Canvas

Learn how EnlightenAI syncs grades to Canvas: a one-way push of scores, feedback, and rubric results back to your Canvas gradebook.

Written by Gautam Thapar

EnlightenAI sends grades to Canvas. Once you finish grading a Canvas-linked assignment, EnlightenAI pushes the score, written feedback, and rubric results back to your Canvas gradebook. It is a one-way sync, not an automatic two-way mirror.

How does the Canvas grade sync work?

The Canvas integration is set up per organization, so your school or district connects to its own Canvas instance. When an assignment originates from Canvas and you have finished grading a submission, EnlightenAI's grade-sync worker sends that grading back to Canvas.

Each synced grade includes:

  • The score posted to the Canvas gradebook

  • A feedback comment combining the comprehensive feedback, strengths, and areas for growth

  • Rubric results, mapped to the matching Canvas rubric criteria

Only gradings marked as graded are synced, and EnlightenAI tracks what has already been sent so it only pushes new or updated grades.

Is the sync two-way?

No. Grades flow from EnlightenAI back to Canvas only. Changes you make directly in the Canvas gradebook are not pulled back into EnlightenAI. To update a grade, edit it in EnlightenAI and it will sync to Canvas on the next run.

Why didn't a grade appear in Canvas?

A grade syncs only when a few conditions are met. Check that:

  • The assignment was created from Canvas, not a standalone EnlightenAI assignment

  • Your organization's Canvas configuration is active

  • The student is matched to a valid Canvas account

  • The grading is finished (marked as graded)
