CBM (Curriculum-Based Measurement) fluency metrics are objective counts EnlightenAI calculates from each student's writing: Total Words Written, Words Spelled Correctly, Correct Word Sequences, and Incorrect Word Sequences. They give you a quick, consistent snapshot of writing fluency alongside your rubric scores.
What does each CBM metric measure?
EnlightenAI computes four metrics per submission, shown in your analytics table as TWW, WSC, CWS, and ICWS:
Total Words Written (TWW) — the total number of words the student wrote.
Words Spelled Correctly (WSC) — how many of those words are spelled correctly.
Correct Word Sequences (CWS) — adjacent word pairs that are correct in spelling, grammar, and meaning.
Incorrect Word Sequences (ICWS) — adjacent word pairs that contain an error.
Together, these show not just how much a student wrote, but how accurately, which is why CBM is a trusted measure of writing growth over time.
When are CBM metrics calculated?
When CBM is enabled on an assignment, EnlightenAI analyzes each submission automatically in the background as gradings are created. Until that analysis finishes, a metric may show a dash (-) or read momentarily off while the background job completes.
If a value looks incomplete or briefly reads high, just refresh the page — once processing finishes, the final counts settle in.
Where do I see CBM metrics?
CBM metrics appear in the assignment analytics table next to each student's rubric scores, and they roll up into course- and organization-level analytics in the Admin Console for broader trend analysis and exports.
