Why did the wrong Google Doc get imported (and how to fix it)

If Classroom imported the wrong Google Doc, EnlightenAI pulls the first Doc attached. Fix the attachment in Classroom and re-import, or paste the text.

Written by Gautam Thapar

When EnlightenAI imports work from Google Classroom, it reads the first Google Doc attached to the student's submission. If the student attached more than one Doc, the wrong file can come in. The fix is to correct the attachment in Classroom and re-import, or paste the correct text directly.

How does EnlightenAI choose which file to import?

For each student submission, EnlightenAI looks through the attachments turned in to that Classroom assignment and imports the first one that is a Google Doc. A few things follow from this:

  • Only Google Docs are imported. PDFs, Google Slides, Sheets, images, and link attachments are skipped.

  • If a student attaches two or more Docs, only the first one is pulled in — even if a later one is the real assignment.

  • If the chosen Doc is empty or can't be read, EnlightenAI moves on, so a stray blank Doc at the top can crowd out the right one.

How do I fix it when the wrong Doc was imported?

The cleanest fix is to correct what's attached in Google Classroom, then bring the submission in again:

  1. In Google Classroom, open the student's submission and remove any extra or blank Docs so the correct one is the only Doc attached.

  2. Back in EnlightenAI, sync the assignment again to re-import the submission with the right file.

What if I can't change the Classroom attachment?

You don't have to rely on Classroom. When you add submissions, EnlightenAI also lets you Copy and paste the student's text directly, or upload a Docx/HTML file. Either method bypasses the attachment picker entirely and guarantees the correct work is graded.

How do I avoid this next time?

Ask students to attach only one Google Doc per submission, and to remove draft or placeholder Docs before turning work in. One Doc per submission means EnlightenAI always imports the right file.
