What is EnlightenAI and how does it work?

EnlightenAI grades student writing with your rubric and a few sample gradings, then writes personalized feedback. Here's how it works.

Written by Gautam Thapar

EnlightenAI is a K-12 platform that grades student writing using your rubric and a few of your own sample gradings (called AI training), then writes personalized, growth-focused feedback for every student. You stay in control: the AI drafts, you review and edit, students see the polished result.

How does EnlightenAI grade and give feedback?

You build an assignment with a rubric and instructions, then grade a few student submissions yourself. EnlightenAI learns from those samples and grades the rest, matching your standards and tone.

For each submission, the AI produces a rubric score plus written feedback (comprehensive comments, strengths, and areas for growth). You review and edit anything before students see it, then click to finish grading.

What is AI training?

AI training is how EnlightenAI learns your grading style. After you manually grade 5 sample submissions, your model reaches 100% trained. Fewer samples still work, just with less context, so we recommend grading all five for the most accurate, consistent results.

What is Immediate Feedback?

Immediate Feedback is an in-class mode where students get AI feedback the moment they submit, then revise and resubmit. You can allow up to 8 attempts per assignment, so students improve their writing in real time before a final grade.

What else can EnlightenAI do?

  • Classes & assignments — organize students into classes and create standard, immediate, or training assignments.

  • Reusable rubrics — build a rubric once and apply it across assignments.

  • AI Documents — generate and adapt teaching materials, plus simplify, shorten, rephrase, or translate text.

  • Student accommodations — translate feedback into 7 languages (Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, Haitian Creole, French, and Portuguese).
