  • Be clear and concise in word choice.

  • State evidence explicitly.

    • When checking for specific evidence in writing, clearly state whether the evidence is present or missing.

    • Example: For properly cited textual evidence, use a phrase like “Proper citing of evidence from the text was/was not evident in your writing.”

  • Keep feedback brief and digestible.

    • The AI tends to be overly detailed, sometimes exceeding the length of the original writing.

    • Use prompts like “Provide feedback in short, bulleted segments that a 6th grader can easily understand.”

  • Adjust language for readability.

    • Request responses in a language a few grade levels below your students’ level to ensure clarity.

  • Use a structured feedback format:

    • “Always structure feedback as follows: Strengths: - point form strengths Needs: - point form needs Next Step: - point form next step. Identify a next step applicable across a range of writing responses.”
